Welcome to the Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative! The Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative (SEAFLI) is a special initiative of the Boren Awards for International Study, which is sponsored by the Defense Language and National Education Security Office (DLNSEO), within the U.S. Department of Defense and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). SEAFLI offers awardees:

  • Intensive language study options
    • Indonesian
    • Thai
    • Vietnamese
  • Both domestic and overseas language programs
  • Cultural immersion

Elementary SEAFLI students participate in a full-time in-person domestic summer program offered at UW-Madison through SEASSI. Students applying for intermediate and advanced level classes are encouraged to reach out to Boren at boren@iieus.org for more information.

All students will then travel abroad to Malang, Indonesia/Chiang Mai, Thailand/Hanoi, Vietnam for a full-time fall semester of language and culture study. All participants must complete both the summer domestic and fall abroad programs. Optional spring extensions are available to students who would like to continue their study. Requests for spring extensions should be indicated in the Boren Awards application to guarantee funding.

In addition to full-time language courses, students will have

  • Language partners
  • Language conversation tables (summer)
  • Homestays (fall)
  • Cultural excursions

These program activities help ensure that language goals are being met. Details on these and many additional benefits will be provided at the start of each program in summer and fall. Participants in SEAFLI may start with no language proficiency or advanced proficiency.
